Denise Matuk-Kroupa, PSA, MPS
Denise thrives on painting en plein aire under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. There is a true passion expressed in her pastels which capture the subtle, yet specific color changes referenced from the atmosphere during the timed works. These works are created directly on site so that one senses that moment in time shared in the painting. Most intriguing is the challenge of capturing the fleeting hues found in the beauty God presents in the sky; whether dawn or afternoon. There is a sincere appreciation by Denise, of how God’s hand leads her to a particular area revealing amazing lighting effects on either land masses or structure. Denise has used soft pastels as her medium for the past 50 years, thoroughly enjoying the journey. It is because of its immediacy and direct color application that has provided such a personally satisfying tactile experience. She tries to draw the viewer into the work by intentionally leaving gestural and suggestive marking. This process invites all to participate by visually walking through the piece.
God has provided Denise with numerous opportunities throughout her career to share her skills through teaching and giving workshops to all age groups. She has been included in multiple national and regional exhibits with various awards to her accomplishments. Denise also holds signature memberships with the Pastel Society of America, charter membership with the Maryland Pastel Society as well as Harford Artist Association. Denise is thrilled to rely on God’s inspiration for future works for His glory.
